Brain Diseases in Men
Brain Diseases are of two types Meningitis and Encephalitis. Meningitis is a disease which causes an inflammation to the meninges whereas encephalitis is an inflammation caused to the brain tissue. The meninges are the linings which cover the spinal cord and the brain and meningitis occurs when the fluid surrounding these meninges becomes infected. The most usual causes for infection are bacteria and viruses. The other causes may be cancer, drug allergies or fungi. On the other hand, Encephalitis is caused by viral infections in most cases. Sometimes though it might be caused due to bacterial infections.
Symptoms of Brain Diseases
The symptoms of bacterial and viral meningitis might appear same initially. However, the symptoms for bacterial meningitis are usually more severe.
Viral Meningitis Symptoms
- decreased appetite
- stiff neck
- sensitivity to bright light
Bacterial Meningitis Symptoms
- altered mental status
- a sensitivity to light
- a headache
- a fever
- a stiff neck
The symptoms for encephalitis can be mild to severe
- stiff neck
- very high fever
- sensitivity to light
- slower movements
Diagnosis of Brain diseases
The doctor first identifies the symptoms for both the diseases and then asks the patient to undergo the following tests:
Lumbar Puncture or Spinal Tap:In this test doctor collects a sample of spinal fluid for testing it for an infection.
Brain Imaging using MRI or CT scan: In this test, any changes to the brain structures are detected. They are basically dome to rule out the possibility of a tumor or a stroke.
Electroencephalograph (EEG): An EEG test uses electrodes attached to the scalp of the head to detect brain activity.
Blood Tests: A blood test to identify viral infections.
Brain Biopsy: The procedure is rarely performed in which the doctor removes a small brain tissue sample to conduct tests on them.
Treatment for Brain Diseases
As far as meningitis is concerned, the treatment is determined based on the cause of the disease. When one suffers from bacterial meningitis, he or she needs to be immediately hospitalized. Early diagnosis & treatment of the disease tends to prevent brain damage and death. When it comes to treatments, bacterial meningitis is treated using intravenous antibiotics. As such there is no specific all curing antibiotic for bacterial meningitis and they are administered based on the bacteria. Fungal is cured with using anti-fungal agents. As far as viral meningitis is concerned, it is not treated. It gets cured on its own and the signs and the symptoms should start disappearing within two weeks. They also do not pose any long term serious health issues.
The treatment for encephalitis mainly focuses on relieving the symptoms. These treatments are:
- Hot water sponge baths
- pain relief tablets
- corticosteroids for reducing the mind inflammation
- anticonvulsants to stop or prevent seizures
- Proper ventilation for helping the breathing problem
- sedatives for restlessness, irritability and aggressiveness
- fluids inserted via an IV
